Introduction
Hi, I am Jack Dawson, I am a formally trained interior decorating West Hampstead. I am sharing all of my knowledge to help you elevate your spaces because we all deserve a beautiful home and a beautiful space that we love. I’m sharing with you the basic principles of interior design and decoration, as well as the things you absolutely have to elevate your space.
Drapery
The first thing we are going to be talking about is drapery and curtains in interior decoration. Now, I know we hear a lot of that,
“Oh, hang the drapes to the ceiling”
And it’s true for a number of reasons. The reason we like curtains hung to the ceiling is because we increase the amount of vertical lines in the space. Increasing the number of vertical lines, as opposed to horizontal, is going to make a space look taller. Make the space feel more open.
Most pieces of furniture, like your sofas, your rugs, and your bed, are not higher than three feet. So what do we do with all the other space?
Designers like interior decorating West Hampstead fill it up, elevate it, and create contrast and dramatic interest.
Stacking depth element
Now, the next most important element to keep in mind when it comes to drapery is the stacking depth of curtains. We want curtains to feel full and substantial. As a general rule of thumb, you want one inch of stacking space for every foot of height. If you have an eight-foot ceiling, eight inches of stacking space. Nine-foot ceiling, nine inches of stacking space. It sounds basic and simple, but this creates good scale and proportions in terms of the draperies because we don’t want them to feel like they’re thin or insignificant, which will lead them to look cheap.
Artwork
While we’re on the topic of height and where to hang things, let’s talk about artwork. There are a lot of misconceptions about where to hang artwork because it can be difficult, or we see different spaces or ideas about it, and a lot of people tell you to hang it at your eye height or in line with your sight. I literally don’t even understand it because it’s one of the most ridiculous things I’ve ever heard.
The reality is that it is something that plays in a museum. It doesn’t work in a house. In a house, you want your artwork to be in line either with the architecture or with itself. This creates balance, scale, and proportion alongside those draperies because you want to bring the eye up, you want to make that space feel grand.
Optimal Heights for Hanging Curtains and Artwork
My top suggestion is when you’re hanging curtains and artwork together, hang them at different heights. Bring those curtains up to the ceiling, and on the decorative paneling for interior walls, the artwork should be definitely below that. You don’t want your artwork hung at ceiling height. It’s going to make it feel way too high, but you also don’t want your artwork to feel low because it will bring down the space and make your ceilings look lower. While curtains and artwork bring the eye up.
Now, let’s transition your thoughts from fabrics to panels.
A short insight: function of decorative paneling for interior walls
These panels come in different materials and finishes. You can go for a modern, smooth look or a cozy, textured style. Acoustic wood slat wall panels are great for reducing noise, which is perfect for busy parts of your home.
Rugs
As a matter of fact, I’m not the biggest fan of all furniture sitting on a rug, I think it creates a space that’s a little bit too hotel-like. As opposed to something that does feel a little bit quirky, does feel a little bit off, because it’s a home because it’s lived in and it has that character.
Choosing the Right Rug Size for a Cozy Home
The one thing you never wanna do, though, is have an undersized rug. If a rug is just sitting under a coffee table, it is not serving you a purpose other than maybe a place for your dog to lay. While I love that for him, it’s not going to add to the design of the space. If anything, it will make the space feel like you have a lot of floating items that don’t have a relation or correlation to one another. Having a rug that’s the appropriate size will ground space but also make a space feel luxurious and connected, warm, comfortable, and cozy.
Lighting
The next thing we’re gonna talk about is lighting. We as designers love to use lighting to
- Enhance a space
- Make it feel warmer
- More inviting cozy
but it’s also great for setting a mood. And the way we achieve this is by having multiple sources of lighting.
Three alternative sources of lighting
Now, of course you have natural lighting, which is wonderful, but we always like to see three alternative sources of lighting.
- Overhead light
- Lamp
- sconces, or a floor lamp.
Some forms of lighting are necessities, and we just have to have them in order to be able to see and use the space, but other forms are all about setting a mood.
Layering light for luxurious interiors
Something like an overhead light on interior decorative wall panels is going to be all about using the space. And while you certainly can get something that’s dimmable, that will also add to the moodiness of the space. We still want to see two more sources, something like a lamp or a sconce is going to be mood lighting, it’s going to create a warm glow. And while you’re using a space of decorative interior wall insulation panels, you can just have those lamps on or just the sconces to create a very sumptuous, luxurious and warm effect in a space and on the wall panels.
Conclusion
To sum up, improving a home with smart interior decorating in West Hampstead is about more than just looks; it’s about making a space where life feels better. By smartly choosing where to hang drapes, place artwork, use paneling, position rugs, and set up lighting, each piece helps change a space. Apple’s C.E.O. puts it perfectly when he says,
“Design isn’t just how it looks and feels. Design is how it works.”
—Steve Jobs
This shows that great interior design combines beauty and function to make spaces not only pretty, but also really comfortable to live in.
